Matrix Audio introduces its first external clock generator, specifically designed for use with streamers, D/A converters, and CD players equipped with a synchronized reference clock input. By delivering a highly precise clock signal, the SC-1 enhances the timing stability of digital signal processing, resulting in a significant improvement in sound reproduction quality.
At the heart of the SC-1 is a custom-developed OCXO (Oven-Controlled Crystal Oscillator) module by Matrix Audio, based on an SC-cut quartz crystal. Although the SC-cut manufacturing process is particularly complex, it delivers exceptional phase noise performance and aging characteristics. Thanks to precise thermal regulation within the heated chamber, the quartz crystal operates in a highly stable environment, effectively minimizing the impact of external temperature fluctuations on phase noise and jitter.
Four Independent Buffers – Synchronized Clock Outputs The SC-1 features four independently buffered clock outputs, all driven from the same ultra-precise source. Each output is equipped with its own dedicated buffer stage to ensure consistent output impedance and excellent driving capability. As a result, the signal integrity remains stable and precise—even when multiple outputs are used simultaneously—making it ideal for synchronizing several high-end audio components in parallel.<(p> Ultra-Low Phase Noise – Better Than -118 dBc at 1 Hz The phase noise performance of any clock generator depends heavily on its internal OCXO module. However, the output stage also plays a crucial role in determining the total signal noise. The SC-1 impresses with a carefully engineered circuit design, achieving phase noise performance of better than –118 dBc at 1 Hz at the output ports—an industry-leading value that ensures an exceptionally pure and stable clock signal.<(p>Clear Operating Status Indication
A status LED on the front panel provides clear feedback about the operational state of the oven module. During the warm-up phase, the LED blinks; once operating temperature is reached, it remains steadily lit. This intuitive design allows users to check the device status at a glance—simple, reliable, and user-friendly.
Selectable Output WaveformsDepending on the application, the SC-1 offers two selectable output waveforms: sine wave or square wave. For maximum accuracy, the square wave output is recommended, as it allows for more precise synchronization—especially in high-resolution digital audio systems.
Long-Term Stability Through Automatic Calibration
Even ultra-precise clock sources are subject to minimal frequency drift over time. To address this, the SC-1 is equipped with a 1PPS reference input on the rear panel. When connected to an external, second-based reference source (e.g., GPSDO), the device performs automatic calibration. The calibration status is also indicated via the front LED. Additionally, Matrix Audio offers a free calibration service to ensure the device’s long-term stability is maintained.
